Feliz Anno Nuevo

New Years is a special time in Ecuador. Remember those effigies I mentioned yesterday? Seems they are "married".

In addition to burning, the Ecuadorians have another New Years' tradition: young men dress up as "widows" of the effigies (drag, with wigs and masks) and stop cars, asking for donations to help them in their new lives. Usually this is accompanied with dancing, lewd remarks and more while parents, girlfriends, wives and similar watch and laugh along. While a bit unusual, this is definitely an interesting way to bring in the New Year.
