Safari Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater

Previous entry.

Ngorongoro Crater. A wildlife sanctuary nestled in the caldera of an extinct volcano. Maasai herders bring their animals in to drink beside wild herds of buffalo, antelopes, zebras, elephants and even rhinos (sadly, none of those came out to play while we were there). Lions, hyenas, jackals and similar prey on the wild herds, making for a condensed form of what we saw in the Serengeti. The biggest attractions of the crater are the rhinos (still fairly rare, but much easier to find than in the Serengeti) but the other animals still put on a great show in their absence. The highlight would have to be the huge number of hyenas (and a few jackals) finishing up the corpse of a buffalo. Quite interesting to see how they manage to get so much sustenance in despite all the fighting.
